Child Abuse
Child abuse isn’t just about
black eyes. While physical abuse is shocking due to the marks it leaves, not
all child abuse is as obvious. Ignoring children’s needs, putting them in unsupervised,
dangerous situations, exposing them to sexual situations, or making them feel
worthless or stupid are also forms of child abuse and neglect. Regardless of
the type of abuse, the result is serious emotional harm.
Yet the effects of abuse do not have to be
permanent. A therapist can help abuse survivors overcome challenges and
address symptoms. Therapy can also help those who engage in abuse to stop
harmful behaviors, though the individual must truly wish to change.
